When I run courses on Photoshop, tools like the magic wand and the clone tools are usually the ones which everyone finds the easiest to start using because they give such immediate results. The Magic Wand is one of three tools in Photoshop which are dedicated to making selections. The Magic Wand works by selecting colours within the image adjacent and similar to any pixel that you click on. Pixels of dissimilar colour act as barriers to selection and so the selection ripples outwards from the point you click on.

As you can imagine, you will not normally completely select your intended subject with one click when you are using the magic wand to make selections. Typically, you will select part of the area that you want and you will then need to add and subtract from the selection, perhaps switching to the other selection tools from time to time. Photoshop offers you two ways of modifying a selection: you can either use modifier keys on you keyboard or activate the modifier icons on the options panel normally displayed below your menu bar.

To add more pixels to your selection, hold down the Shift key while clicking with the Magic Wand on a part of the image which is not yet selected. To subtract from the selection, hold down the Alt key and click on the part of the selection which you wish to deselect. The selection modifier icons are situated on the left of the options panel. There are four of them: new selection, add to selection, subtract from selection and select intersection. These icons effectively allow you to change selection mode on a permanent basis. Thus, for example, you could click on the second of the four icons when using the Magic Wand and click continually on different parts of a subject until it was completely selected.

If you want to select a subject against a uniform background such as a wall or the sky, a simple trick is to use the magic wand to select the background and then invert the selection by choosing Select – Inverse. A slight variation on this technique is to make a rough selection which completely encloses the subject as well some of the background and then to use the Magic Wand in subtract mode to remove the background from the selection.

You can control the number of pixels which the Magic Wand selects when you click on part of the image by changing a setting called tolerance. Tolerance determines how far a pixel can vary from the pixel that you click on and still be included in the selection. The default tolerance is 32 and the maximum is 255.

Not every child is created alike, and likewise, not every child can be successfully photographed in the same way. Taking advantage of each child’s photogenic attributes will set you apart, whether you’re a candid children’s photographer in Pasadena, or anywhere else in the world.

The entertainer will practically orchestrate the photo session for you. She’ll suggest poses without a hint of self consciousness. She’ll make sure that you notice and remember her. The Conversationalist. The conversationalist loves to share knowledge. He or she will throw out facts that are meant to impress you, and will enjoy gathering information from you. Engage this child in conversation, and be ready to capture the thoughtful expressions that result from your comments.

This child will also be willing to incorporate some interpretive actions. Maybe she’ll like to recreate a scene from the school play or show you how her favorite predator stalks its prey. These activities will result in some priceless shots.

Be careful with the conversationalist child, though. If you talk too much during the introduction, he might become burned out, leaving the meat of expression behind. Or, if you jump into the photography too soon, he might be caught off guard and clam up. Start the dialogue right away, move leisurely, and snap shots throughout the warm up period. Continue shooting as his personality blooms before you.

The Observer. The observant child will watch closely, take in his or her surroundings, and may be hypersensitive to uncomfortable clothing and poses. He or she will also display expressions that seem to show a number of emotions all at once. This type of child will respond well to your attention and plenty of forewarning about what’s coming next. Abrupt interruptions of activities will annoy or alienate this child.

The sick child’s parents should reschedule. Try to explain that they’ll be able to detect the exhaustion in their child’s expression, and will always be reminded of the illness through the photo. You should also do what you can to keep yourself and your other clients out of germs’ ways.

The tired child’s behavior can be unpredictable, and uncharacteristic. This means that you may capture shots that don’t accurately portray the child’s personality. Reserve large blocks of time for children’s sessions, and be flexible. Be prepared to allow time for makeup sleep, if necessary.

The tantrum throwing child can be an interesting subject for a children’s photographer. Encourage the parents to allow you to gather some of these shots, as well as allowing the tantrum to run its course.

You are not responsible for the tantrum, nor are you responsible for stopping it. Only mediate if it’s your setting, lighting, or props causing the problem. Always choose to conserve the child’s mood rather than your idea of the perfect background.

You have the chance to capture the candid shots that parents can’t or won’t. Get to know your subject, and you’ll give yourself the ability to capture that expression, that sincere moment, or that unadulterated giggle that might otherwise have been lost forever.

The conversationalist child will share everything he knows about everything he’s ever done, if given the time. He’ll also enjoy receiving information from your end. Be ready to snap shots of his thoughtful gaze when you give him a fascinating piece of knowledge from your world.

The observant one will miss little, including any part of her surroundings that annoy her or make her uncomfortable. Many emotions will manifest on her face, some simultaneously. Don’t abruptly end any activity, give plenty of warning about the next activity, and pay plenty of attention to what she has to say. This way, you can sidestep any negative feelings she may develop.

A sick child does not belong in your studio. The illness could easily spread to you and other clients. Plus, a parent can always read fatigue in their child’s face. Remind parents that they will always view those photos as the ones taken when he was sick.

The Sleepy One. A child that is tired can react negatively, making the shoot more difficult. Schedule an entire morning or afternoon for children’s photography. Allow the parents to choose the optimum arrival time, and keep it flexible, in case of a missed nap.

The Protestor. Outbursts are not an indicator of failure. Some parents may even be open to the idea of gathering some shots during the outburst. Encourage the parents to allow the tantrum to run its course. This will preserve the child’s mood after it subsides.

Canon introduces a new addition to its Rebel lineup, the EOS Rebel T1i Digital SLR camera, the first in the Rebel line to feature Full HD video capture. The new Canon Rebel T1i SLR incorporates some of the best technologies from the EOS 50D and EOS 5D Mark II models into an entry-level juggernaut. With a 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor and HD video capture, along with the DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor, the Canon Rebel T1i gives aspiring photographers plenty of reason to step-up to the latest and greatest model in the Rebel lineup. The new Canon EOS Rebel T1i SLR camera raises the entry-level bar with a host of enhanced Canon technologies now available in an entry-level DSLR.

Now at the top of the Rebel line, the Canon T1i takes on the Nikon D90, with its video mode, while the XS and XSi are left to challenge the Nikon D40 and D60. With the Rebel T1i, Canon is answering the pincer move that Nikon’s put on it in the past few years, now matching them model-to-model at the low end, because the XS and XSi will remain in the lineup.

While the new HD movie mode is going to be the gee-whiz feature on the Canon Rebel T1i, the important feature for most photographers is the still image quality at 15.1 megapixels. Controls and body styling are nearly identical (differences are broken down in the User Report below); the main changes are internal.
